Finding the perfect home in Wisconsin’s Northwoods may seem simple. With over 4,000 lakes in the region, we’re considered one of the wettest areas in the world and finding a home on a lake is not difficult. Finding the perfect lake home for you requires certain considerations.
Each lake tends to have its own personality and you want to find the ones that match your own. The first consideration is what kind of water activities do you enjoy? Fishing, swimming, powerboats, jet-skis, water-skiing? Lake chains are very popular and provide what we call “destination boating”. On the Eagle River Chain O’Lakes–the largest interconnecting natural chain of lakes in the world–10 of the 28 lakes are on the Eagle River side and the other 18 are on the Three Lakes end. On the Eagle River side, there are 15 restaurants and bars on the Chain. Boaters can dock at a different restaurant each night, or have dinner at one restaurant and a nightcap at another stop. The Three Lakes side doesn’t have as many businesses on the Chain, but lakes are larger. There are other lake chains in the area: the Minocqua Chain, the Fence Lake Chain in Lac du Flambeau, the Manitowish Chain, the Sugar Camp Chain, the Cisco Chain, the Rhinelander Chain, and the Moen Chain.
If a quieter lake appeals to you, know that in the state of Wisconsin, all lakes under 50 acres are non-motorized. Lake Tomahawk and Trout Lake are huge lakes which are sought after for their clear water, but there are 100’s of small lakes which are often overlooked with similar water clarity. The phrase “gin clear” is frequently used to describe how very clear our lakes are and it’s a fitting description.
Many people may initially want level frontage on a lake. While that has advantages, there’s much to be said about being elevated from a lake, if nothing else but for the spectacular views. Other considerations include lake depth, topographic characteristics, lake bottoms, trophic states, and lake types.
